The Senate is considering rejecting the 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation, a source told Daily Trust last night.
The source however said that the Senate has agreed to confirm all the 47 career foreign diplomats sent earlier by the president.
Buhari had last month submitted the names of 46 persons for consideration and confirmation as non-career ambassadors.
Twice penultimate Tuesday, senators voted against the consideration of the president’s request but Senate President Bukola Saraki vetoed the move in favour of the president’s request.
The source said the committee on foreign affairs, which was mandated to screen the nominees, has recommended their rejection.
“It is in view of the outcries that are trailing the list by our party members across the country that the committee suggested that it should be rejected. The leadership of the Senate is expected to take a position on it this night, (yesterday),” he said.
He said if leadership agrees, the president would be asked to submit a new list. State governors had expressed reservations on some of the nominees.
The Senate’s spokesman Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said “Yes, there are outcries, we have heard it through the media. The issue has been committed to the Foreign Affairs committee and remember the career nominees are still before the committee. A decision would be taken on both the career and non-career nominees,” he said.
