Judicial corruption: How lawyer ‘bribed’ Justice Yunusa with N1m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating Joseph Nwobike, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who is alleged to have bribed embattled High Court Judge, Justice Mohammed Yunusa, with N1 million.
According to Sahara Reporters, Justice Yunusa had issued an injunction stopping anti-graft agencies from investigating or arresting the Personal Assistant (PA) to Patrick Akpobolokemi, the former Director General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The EFCC discovered that Akpobolokemi’s PA had purchased a property in Banana Island, Lagos, from money allegedly obtained from corrupt practices at NIMASA.
Nwobike had persuaded Justice Yunusa to issue an injunction that will stop the investigation or arrest of the PA.
According to the news report, Nwobike was shocked when evidence connecting to him to the bribe and the injunction was shown to him.
It would be recalled that Justice Yunusa was also linked in the ongoing criminal trial of top lawyer, Rickey Tarfa.
Yunusa had received N225, 000 from Tarfa, who claimed that the money was a ‘gift’ to commiserate with Justice Yunusa over his father’s death.
It is also alleged that Justice Yunusa had issued the injunction that stopped investigation into the corrupt acquisition of BMW bulletproff vehicles by former minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah.
Yunusa has long since been transferred to Yobe state pending investigation into his activities.

Pastor Snatches Wife Of Church Member In Osun

A Customary Court in Ile-Ife, Osun State on Monday dissolved a marriage of 10 years between a log seller, Olusola Onifade and his wife, Simbiatu when the man declared that their pastor, Femi Olayinka had snatched the woman from him.

Olusola urged the court to dissolve the marriage because Pastor Femi Olayinka has taken the woman from him and that he was just a figurehead husband while the pastor was in charge of the woman.

He also told the court that the Pastor had threatened to kill him if he refused to leave the woman for him.

The husband said he was persuaded to attend Pastor Femi’s Church known as Christ Miracle Church, Orisun-Iye, Power Line, Ajebamidele, Ile-Ife and that he took his wife there without knowing that the pastor would snatch the woman from him.

“I was disappointed when Pastor Femi confronted me and told me that he was already having sexual intercourse with my wife. He told me he is responsible for her pregnancy and warned me to stay away from the woman if I still want to live,” Olusola said.

Simbiatu in her submission admitted that her husband’s claim was true and also told the court that she was no longer interested in her husband, insisting that she would prefer to go with Pastor Femi.

The President of the court, Chief Bunmi Adegoke after listening to both parties, ordered the dissolution of the marriage and directed that their two children should be in the custody of the husband.

With the 2017 Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifying double-header against Egypt fast approaching, the new Super Eagles technical crew will definitely be faced with the dreadful task of choosing the right players to do the job for Nigeria. Here are five players that can ‘safely land’ the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Gabon 2017. 1. Victor Moses: Arguably Nigeria’s best creative attacker at the moment. Moses has proved beyond doubt that he is a threat to any defence, anytime, any day. He was part of the Nigerian team that won the 2013 AFCON tournament in South Africa under Coach Stephen Keshi and was very active at the tournament. His effort paid off in their last group match against Ethiopia as he got two late goals from the spot. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter "5 players Samson Siasia must recall for Egypt double-header" Victor Moses applauds West Ham fans after a game The 25-year-old was also exceptional in the semi-final and final of that tournament. Although, injury has gotten the better part of the Nigerian, Moses’ brilliant strike helped his EPL club West Ham United to overcome Blackburn from a fine finish in the FA cup. No one has been able to fill the big vacuum his absence has created in the Super Eagles. He should be recalled. 2. Brown Ideye: The sensational forward has just won his first-ever league title in Europe with Olympiakos. The player has scored seven goals this season. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter "5 players Samson Siasia must recall for Egypt double-header" Brown Ideye (r) in action for Werder Bremen Ideye’s wealth of experience will be crucial in the game against the Pharaohs as he is obviously fit and has always been in action, having scored 45 goals for Dynamo Kyiv, West Brom and Olympiacos in total so far. 3. John Ogu: Another quality central and defensive midfielder. Ogu who currently plays for Israel’s Ligat HaAl table toppers, Hapoel Be’er Sheva, is currently having an exceptional season. He will be very effective against the attack force of the Hector Cuper-led Pharaohs. 4. Anthony Ujah: The sensational striker has scored nine goals for Werder Bremen this season. Ujah scored a brace against his former club Mainz to help his team ease five successive defeats. It would be recalled that the player was part of the Super Eagles under Stephen Keshi during the 2013 FIFA confederation’s cup in Brazil. The 25-year-old was on target this weekend in Bremen’s 2 – 2 draw at home to Darmstadt, and also played full 90 minutes, an indication the striker is in top shape. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter "5 players Samson Siasia must recall for Egypt double-header" Anthony Ujah He is very good with power and pace which the Eagles must have, in a bid to crush the Egyptians. 5. Vincent Enyeama: Yes; he has retired from international football. Nigeria needs Vincent Enyeama more than ever against Egypt. Although he might not have publicly said Sunday Oliseh’s option to choose Ahmed Musa as captain over him forced him to dump the Super Eagles, Enyeama is still Nigeria’s most brilliant goalkeeper. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter "5 players Samson Siasia must recall for Egypt double-header" Vincent Enyeama The 33-year-old had pulled series of quality saves which have been a major reason Lille are still above relegation zone in Ligue 1. Enyeama’s wealth of experience is very crucial, although Carl Ikeme and Austin Ejide are good choices as well.

3 Night Guards Gang-rape Teenager (photo)

Cyriacus Izuekwe

A 16-year-old girl has been hospitalized after three night guards abducted and gang-raped her till day break.
The victim lost her virginity in the process and was taken to a General Hospital where she is receiving treatment for the injuries she sustained in her private part.

The incident happened on 20 February, 2016 at Tedi town in Ojo on the outskirts of Lagos State, western Nigeria, where the victim lives with her parents and where the suspects were employed as night guards.

Following the dastardly act, the police in Ojo division arrested two out of the three suspects and charged them before Ojo Magistrates’ Court with conspiracy and unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim.
The two arrested suspects are Ugo Onuora and Bright Anaenyewu, while the third suspect is now on the run.

The victim’s ordeal started when she took a ride on a commercial motorcycle popularly known as Okada while returning to her parents’ home at about 9 p.m.

The suspects who had resumed work on that day flagged down the motorcycle rider, discharged the rider and ordered the victim to follow them to where they used as their office.

They forced her to pull off her clothes and warned her not to scream otherwise they would kill her.
The victim obeyed out of fear and they raped her in turns till early morning when they allowed her to go.

When the victim returned to her house, her parents and their neighbours who were already searching for her asked her what happened and she narrated her odeal with blood still streaming from her private part.
The matter was reported to the police who took her to a hospital and went after the suspects.

Onuora and Anaenyewu were eventually arrested and taken to court on Monday.
When they were arraigned, they pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr A. A. Paul granted the suspects bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The court also ordered that the sureties must pay N100,000 into Chief Registrar’s account pending the determination of the case and evidence of tax payment.
The suspects were remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when they will perfect their bail.

Clearing Agent Arrested For Diverting Client’s 2 Containers, SUV (photo)

Cyriacus Izuekwe

Police detectives at Federal Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, Alagbon, have arrested a clearing agent for allegedly diverting his client’s containers and SUV Toyota Highlander SUV worth over N25 million in Lagos State, western Nigeria.
He allegedly cleared the containers and sold the vehicles and goods inside it to settle his debts and went into hiding.

The suspect, Tony Benson, was arrested at the weekend in his hideout in Ikeja where he hid for several months after committing the alleged crime at Apapa Wharf terminal.

The containers and the SUV belong to Damian Ikeokwu, a Nigerian based in Canada, who contracted Benson to clear the items.
It was alleged that Benson first cleared the SUV and used it to settle a debt, unknown to Ikeokwu.

Benson also took delivery of two other containers and reportedly sold all the vehicles and spare parts in them at give away prices and went underground.
Items in the containers are: Toyota Highlander, Matrix, Camry, Nissan Pathfinder and spare parts and other goods worth N25 million.

The arrest of Benson followed a petition by Ikeokwu to the Inspector General of Police against Benson for alleged fraud, stealing and criminal conversion of containers of vehicles and goods worth millions of naira.

In the petition written on behalf of the victim by the chambers of Kissinger Ikeokwu and dated November 2015, it stated that the victim was based in Canada and had contract agreement with Benson to clear four containers.

It stated that Benson later asked Ikeokwu to use the clearing charge to send a container of cars which he did.

However, two other containers Ikeokwu sent to Benson to clear for him were cleared by Benson and the items inside them were sold without the knowledge of Ikeokwu.

P.M.NEWS gathered that after Benson sold the containers and goods including using the Highlander SUV to settle his debt, he moved out of his house to an unknown place.

While all this was going on, Ikeokwu was in Canada and did not know how to locate Benson until the police tracked him down and arrested him last week.

He was taken to the Special Fraud Unit, SFU, Alagbon where he allegedly confessed that he cleared the containers and sold the cars in them.

On the SUV, he said he did not sell it, adding that he was indebted and the person he was owing forcefully took the SUV which the police have now recovered.

Benson said he sold the items because Ikeokwu was owing him N12 million for the demurrage the containers incurred during the clearance but did not provide evidence to buttress his claims.

When our reporter visited Alagbon, Benson was still in detention and his relations were making efforts to facilitate administrative bail from the police.

P.M.NEWS gathered that Benson was already facing a criminal charge before Apapa Magistrates’ court for allegedly using a stolen vehicle to settle his debt.
Police sources said Benson will be prosecuted after the conclusion of investigation.

Ese Oruru’s alleged abduction: Fresh controversy erupts as audio tape surfaces

Ese Oruru, who was alleged to have been kidnapped from Bayelsa State to Kano, on Monday, purportedly said she was not abducted from her home and has no intention of going back anytime soon.
In the audio tape obtained by Premium Times, the girl- said to be Ese Oruru- could be heard saying she came to Kano, specifically to convert to Islam.
“My name is Aisha Chuwas. I am 17-year-old. I came here to be a Muslim and I will stay here,” the teenage girl could be heard saying.

Meanwhile, a human rights lawyer, Huwaila Mohammed, was also reported to have been given access to the girl at the Zonal Police Headquarters in Kano.
During interrogation, Ese Oruru was said to have cut across as one who ‘eloped not because of religion but love’, with Mohammed further stating that her alleged abductor- Yunusa Yellow, was ‘just an 18-year-old small boy’.
“I was there to protect her rights. When I approached her initially, she refused to talk to me. Later she opened up to me. She is very defiant. She told me she was born in February 1999. I personally wanted her to reunite with her family, but surprisingly she asked me to tell her mother that she will never return to Bayelsa.”
“The police should ensure that she is protected and returned to her family. She is still not matured enough to take such a weighty decision without parental consent.”
“I was surprised when I saw a very small boy. He is just 18-year old. I was enraged thinking that it was an old man involved in the saga. From the way I see it, they eloped not because of religion but love.”
Mohammed’s submission is in contrast with the widespread report that she was 14-years-old and also, was abducted and forcefully married.
Meanwhile, a video recording posted on the Facebook page of KHAN Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, depicts the family of Ese, stating that she is indeed a minor, and that her 14th birthday was last week.
