Ese Oruru, who was alleged to have been kidnapped from Bayelsa State to Kano, on Monday, purportedly said she was not abducted from her home and has no intention of going back anytime soon.
In the audio tape obtained by Premium Times, the girl- said to be Ese Oruru- could be heard saying she came to Kano, specifically to convert to Islam.
“My name is Aisha Chuwas. I am 17-year-old. I came here to be a Muslim and I will stay here,” the teenage girl could be heard saying.
Meanwhile, a human rights lawyer, Huwaila Mohammed, was also reported to have been given access to the girl at the Zonal Police Headquarters in Kano.
During interrogation, Ese Oruru was said to have cut across as one who ‘eloped not because of religion but love’, with Mohammed further stating that her alleged abductor- Yunusa Yellow, was ‘just an 18-year-old small boy’.
“I was there to protect her rights. When I approached her initially, she refused to talk to me. Later she opened up to me. She is very defiant. She told me she was born in February 1999. I personally wanted her to reunite with her family, but surprisingly she asked me to tell her mother that she will never return to Bayelsa.”
“The police should ensure that she is protected and returned to her family. She is still not matured enough to take such a weighty decision without parental consent.”
“I was surprised when I saw a very small boy. He is just 18-year old. I was enraged thinking that it was an old man involved in the saga. From the way I see it, they eloped not because of religion but love.”
Mohammed’s submission is in contrast with the widespread report that she was 14-years-old and also, was abducted and forcefully married.
Meanwhile, a video recording posted on the Facebook page of KHAN Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, depicts the family of Ese, stating that she is indeed a minor, and that her 14th birthday was last week.
