Goodluck Jonathan Wins The Trent Award

One of Nigeria’s online newspapers, The Trent has named former President Goodluck Jonathan Person of the Year 2015.
Ever since he left office, Goodluck Jonathan has received several awards for his stewardship as Nigeria’s leader
Speaking on the award, the newspaper’s president and executive editor, Ms. Aziza Uko told journalists in Lagos: ‘”We are delighted to launch our Person of the Year Award with such a deserving statesman.
“This marks our second anniversary and our Editorial Board decided to launch this award to celebrate the best among us, to present to the country, especially, the young generation, real symbols of hope.”
According to Ms. Uko: ”More than any Nigerian alive, we believe that Jonathan represents the spirit of a united Nigeria governed under democratic ideals and principles. By honoring him, we are simply re-kindling faith in the possibility of a new Nigeria.”
Earlier, in an editorial to celebrate the former president as Person of the Year 2015, The Trent noted that by leaving the stage when the ovation was loudest, ”Jonathan opened a golden page in the chapters of democracy’s history, showing clearly to the world that Africa was not a continent of incompetent leaders and despotic rulers who sit tight in office at the expense of their nations’ future.”
Meanwhile, former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the Person of the Year Award 2015 conferred on him by the newspaper as a ”pleasant surprise.”
Jonathan said he felt deeply touched by the kind gesture and honour coming months after he has left office.
”This is a pleasant surprise. I feel extremely humbled. I couldn’t have imagined that a group of young people would consider me worthy of this great honour months after I left office as President.
“Usually, people like us receive awards when we are in office because of the position and power that we have. It is moments like this that you actually realize the people who are truly your friends.
“I see this award as an encouragement not just for me but the upcoming generations of Nigerians. I see it also as a celebration of how far Nigeria has come as a democracy. I commend the Editorial Board of The Trent and wish them the very best in their journalistic endeavors,” he  said.

Editor’s note: Abang Dove, an Abuja-based blogger, makes a list of the most influential, efficient and determined senators that were especially prominent in the year 2015.

No Plan to Spend N50bn on Cars, Says Senate

The Senate today, December 31 has described as untrue the claim that it planned to purchase cars that will be worth N50bn as claimed by President Muhammadu Buhari in his maiden media chat on Wednesday.
The senate chamber
As it was reported earlier the Nigerian Senate is supposedly planning to buy different brands of cars for use by its president, Bukola Saraki, his deputy Ike Ekweremadu and the 108 other senators.
According to one of the sources, the Senate is planning to buy 20 units of Toyota Land Cruiser, 2016 model. The vehicles also must be “American Brand, V8, VXR, 5.7, Auto Engine with intelligence.”
But in a statement by its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate said while the Senate is contemplating purchasing cars, it does not intend to spend anything close to the various figures of N4.5bn, N6bn or N50bn as being bandied around.
He added that shortly after getting the management team and the Senate services committee to commence the due process for the purchase, certain contractors who bid for the supply of the vehicles but felt their bid would not scale through began sponsoring media propaganda against the project and even leaked the recommendations of the body working on the proposed project.
“Since the claim in an online medium that we are planning to purchase vehicles, we have not taken any further action on the issue. We are surprised that a proposed purchase became a subject of controversy and several figures that are far from our projections have been bandied around.

“While an online medium put the figure at N4.5 billion, another one said N6 billion and now the President on national television was talking about N50 billion. These are outrageous figures. Once the debate on the 2016 budget begins, Nigerians will have the opportunity of knowing how much we voted for purchase of cars and how we intend spending the vote.

“This is a responsible and responsive National Assembly. We really need project for vehicles to facilitate our work We will however follow due process when we choose to take decisions on the purchase. We will also take into consideration the views, feelings and mood of the nation in taking the decisions. We will not be profligate or extravagant when what is apparently needed in our country  is moderate and frugal spending.
“We however call on all Nigerians to be patient with us, and not jump the gun or rush into conclusions, particularly when no decision has been taken. The way the issue is being presented is as if we have ordered the car or have paid for it”, Abdullahi stated.

How To Find Unadvertised Jobs Using Google

Most job openings at most companies go unadvertised—that is, they're posted on their site, but they're not farmed out to recruiters or posted on massive job boards. That also makes them harder to find. Thankfully, Google can do the job for you. Use these search strings to uncover matching gigs.

The market for new jobs is so competitive that most companies don't see a need to spend a ton of money hiring third-party recruiting firms or posting their jobs to the top of big job boards just to get candidates to apply. Between internal referral programs and word-of-mouth, posting a job to the company's "Careers" page is usually enough. To uncover those unadvertised openings, all you need is a little Google-fu. The folks at the Glassdoor Blog explain that all you need to do is cast your net over the major employee applicant tracking systems that companies use to post and manage responses to their job postings

Do you know what an applicant tracking system is? Wikipedia defines it as “a software application that enables the electronic handling of recruitment needs.” As a jobseeker, you refer to it as the electronic blackhole that eats up resumes. Specifically, it’s the system you interact with when you apply for a job on a company careers website. One of the more popular applicant tracking systems is produced by a company called “Taleo.”

With a little help from Google, you will be able to search company websites that are using the Taleo system. In this way, you will be able to find jobs that are not posted on (insert leading job board name here) and have an edge on your competition. Let me show you how.

In the Google search below, I am asking Google to look only on the Taleo.net website (where their system hosts various unadvertised jobs that are typically obtainable when a jobseeker does a search on a company’s careers website). I do this when I search: “site:taleo.net” Afterward, I ask Google to find only those webpages that have “careers” in the title. This is what “intitle:careers” means. Finally, I add in the job title “programmer” because that is the job I am looking for. Of course, just adding a job title is giving me too many broad results. I narrow it down by adding more keywords like “SAS” and “macro.”

In short, to search all sites using Taleo, for example:

site:taleo.net intitle:careers JOBTITLE OTHERIMPORTANTWORDS

Repeat the process for any other applicant tracking systems you know are in wide use, like Kenexa's BrassRing (brassring.com) for example.

Ishaku Wins At The Appeal Court As Alhassan Loses Out

Senator Aisha Alhassan has lost the battle to claim the Taraba state Government House today as the Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja upturned the verdict of the election tribunal and ruled that the method of nomination of a candidate should not be one of the grounds for disqualification for the election as stated in the constitution and the electoral act.
It also ruled that the issue of PDP primary which produced Governor Darius Ishaku was a pre-election matter that should not have been entertained by the Tribunal.

The court also ruled that only INEC and members of PDP who participated in the primary election has the right to complain.
The Court said whether the primary of a political party was done right or not cannot be subject of an election petition.
The court said the most important question was whether the appellant was a member of PDP and was sponsored by the party for the gubernatorial.

The court ruled that Ishaku was validly nominated candidate of PDP for the election and he participated in the election.
In the judgment of the court, Alhassan and APC have no right to challenge the election in which Ishaku emerged since none of them is a member of PDP.

According to the court, the decision of the Tribunal not to take into consideration the testimony of appellant witnesses that the PDP primary election was shifted to Abuja because of security situation was perverse. It therefore set the decision of the Tribunal aside.
“If the Tribunal decides that a candidate elected at an election was not validly nominated, it can nullify the victory, it should order for fresh election and not declare the petitioner the winner of the poll”.
The court therefore ruled that the Tribunal was wrong to have declared the APC candidate who scored the second highest number of votes the winner of the election.

The court said it was a gross misdirection for the Tribunal to declare the APC candidate winner of the election on the basis that he secured the second highest number of votes.
The Court allowed the Appeal and overturned the judgement of the Tribunal. The Court held that Ishaku was validly elected as Governor of Taraba State and his certificate of return remains valid.

In earlier rulings the five man panel dismissed arguments by the appellant, Ishaku that the Tribunal should not have accepted the statements of the witnesses because they were not properly signed. Thus, the appellant argued, the Tribunal should have struck out the petition.
The court held that the statements upon examination, were properly signed and stamped by the Secretary to the Tribunal who statutorily was the head of the registry of the Tribunal. The Appellate Court held that the petitioner fully complied with all statutory stipulations for filing of statement of witnesses and that the Tribunal was right to have accepted them.

The court also argued that it will amount to great injustice if the petitioner is held responsible for the mistake of the registry of the Tribunal.
Also, the court dismissed arguments by the appellant that the reliefs sought by the petitioner are incongruent. The appellant had argued that the petitioner cannot be claiming that the election was marred by malpractices and at the same time, asking to be declared winner of the election.

Nigeria Won’t Release 2 Detainees Despite Court Orders. Washington Post.

LAGOS, Nigeria

Nigeria’s government will not release two prominent detainees despite several court orders for their release, and will not comment on the situation of a third, wounded detainee, President Muhammadu Buhari said Wednesday.

Buhari, a former military dictator who calls himself a born-again democrat, did not discuss the propriety of defying court orders when he spoke on national TV.

“If you see the atrocities these people committed against this country!” Buhari said in justification. “We can’t allow them to jump bail.”

A Federal High Court set no bail conditions and ordered the unconditional release of Biafra separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu on Dec. 17. Kanu was detained Oct. 17 on charges recently escalated to terrorism and financing terrorism. His cause led to a civil war that killed 1 million people in the 1960s.

Former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki was detained Nov. 4 after intelligence agents surrounded his home for days to prevent him from leaving the country after a court allowed him bail to seek medical care abroad.

Dasuki is accused, among other things, of diverting $2.2 billion meant to buy arms to fight the Boko Haram Islamic uprising. Three courts have ordered his release on bail.

“What of the over two million people displaced, most of them orphans whose fathers have been killed?” Buhari asked. “We cannot allow that.”

He refused to discuss the situation of Shiite leader Ibraheem Zakzaky, who was detained with four bullet wounds Dec. 14 in military raids that allegedly killed hundreds of his followers.

The army said the raids and bulldozing of Zakzaky’s home and Shiite spiritual centers was a response to an alleged Shiite attempt to assassinate Nigeria’s army chief. Human Rights Watch has said the raid was unprovoked.

Authorities have refused to allow anyone to see Zakzaky.

Buhari said he would not comment until an investigation is complete.

PDP Accuses Buhari Of Embarking On Revenge Mission

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of pursuing a vendetta mission against members of the opposition under the guise of fighting corruption.
PDP has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of using his administration’s anti-corruption war as a vengeance mission.
The acting national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, who stated this in his New Year message to Nigerians in Abuja on Thursday, December 30, alleged that president Buhari’s anti-corruption war was a ploy by the president to harass and intimidate members of PDP and associates.
The party boss according to The Punch, described the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government as a gang-up of aggrieved people who came take over the relms of power but were never prepared for governance.
He said: “To date, APC does not have a clear agenda as to how to bring about the change they promised. As a result, Nigerians have seen the APC for all it is worth, ‘an ill prepared party with an ill prepared agenda for governance.’
“Nigerians have seen the chaotic situation at hand orchestrated by the incoherent policy initiatives of the APC led government. Yes, this is the reality we face.
“From the confusion in the subsidy question to the insurgency conundrum. From the discredited anti-corruption fight to the confusion in the government’s economic policy.”
The party has also described President Muhammadu Buhari’s responses at the presidential media chat as embarrassing.
According to the PDP, Buhari gave no inspiring answers to questions pertaining to his campaign promises, the fight against insurgency, rescue of the Chibok girls, the poor state of the naira and the gradual loss of democratic rights and freedom under his watch.

'I Foresee Wher God Visited His anger On Buhari' - Cleric

Image result for Venerable Joseph Nweke,
Venerable Joseph Nweke,
Venerable Joseph Nweke, the Archdeacon of Oyi Anglican Archdeaconry in Anambra state has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against keeping Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra in detention.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 30, during a church service to mark St. John the Apostles Day said Buhari would be incurring the wrath of God if he continued to keep Kanu detained, defying all court order, Vanguard reports.
According to him, the continuous detention of Kanu against court orders could be likened to the Biblical Pharoah, who refused to allow the Israelites to leave Egypt and also the Biblical St. John, the Apostle, who could not be killed by the enemies, even after they threw him into hot oil.
This is a voice of reason. I foresee a situation where God visited His anger on Buhari if he failed to release Kanu from the detention. So, I am advising Mr. President to release him in order to escape that wrath,” he said.
Nweke, who is also the director of civil and political affairs, Anambra state chapter, said even Kanu had a case to answer in the law courts, he should first be released from the detention while his trial in court continued.
He stated that he had concluded that the government had no basis to continue detaining Kanu, after several competent court of laws had ruled for his release.
Kanu has been in the Department of State Services (DSS) detention over charges of treason and other ancillary offences.
Reports had surfaced that Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), apologised to President Buhari for referring to him as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile in his radio broadcasts.
However, in a swift reaction, his lawyer, Vincent Obetta said it was impossible that Kanu tendered an apology.

Drug Peddling: Baron Recruits Lady Via Facebook Marriage Proposal (photo)

A lady, who was unwittingly recruited into drug trafficking by a fiancé she met on Facebook, residing in Malaysia, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The suspect, Gloria Ezeabata, was arrested during screening of passengers on an Ethiopian airline flight on her way to Malaysia at the departure hall.

Ezeabata, who works with an accounting firm in Lagos, admitted having a Facebook relationship that got her involved in drug trafficking. She said: “I met a man on Facebook some months ago who lives in Malaysia. He told me while chatting online that he is from my state, Anambra in South-East, Nigeria. After some months, he proposed marriage and I told him to come to Nigeria to meet my parents as our custom demands. He promised to fulfil every marriage rite. “Months later, he invited me to Malaysia, promising to pay all the travel expenses. After several appeals, I decided to visit him.

The day I was to travel, he told me to take along a bag of foodstuff sent by his mother from the village. I was given the bag at the airport but in the process of checking it in, drug was discovered inside packs of noodles in the bag and I was arrested.”

Substances that tested positive for methamphetamine weighing 1.325kg were detected in her luggage.

The drug was concealed in 26 packs of noodles in a bag of foodstuff containing plantain, pepper, melon and other spices.

Further investigation led to the arrest of one Mr. Philip Akpaka, 39, who allegedly coordinated the travel arrangement for Gloria and gave her the bag containing the drugs. NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba said that Gloria was arrested following the discovery of methamphetamine in her luggage.

Akpaka also admitted preparing the travel documents of Gloria on the request of his friend based in Malaysia. He said: “I’m a transporter. My friend in Malaysia asked me to prepare travel documents for Gloria. He also asked me to give a bag to Gloria to take to Malaysia.” Both suspects will soon be charged to court for conspiracy, unlawful possession and exportation of narcotic drugs.

Ericsson Confiscates Radio Biafra Transmitter On MTN Mast In Enugu

Image result for ERICSSON
Ericsson Nigeria has admitted that a contract employee working with it was actually responsible for the Radio Biafra transmitter installed on an MTN mast in Enugu.
In a statement signed by its Managing Director, Johan Jemdahl, the firm said it had confiscated the transmitter and had notified the authorities.

The statement reads: “Illegal FM transmitting equipment was discovered connected to an outsourced MTN mast, managed by Ericsson, in Enugu in Eastern Nigeria. The equipment was immediately confiscated and the authorities were notified. A contractor to Ericsson has subsequently been taken into police custody after his involvement was discovered. He has been discharged from his contracted responsibilities with Ericsson.

“Ericsson views this incident in an extremely serious light. It is the result of a violation of its process that permits access to its mast sites. As a result, Ericsson has initiated immediate action to foil any similar attempts. All mast sites in Enugu and Port Harcourt regions have been audited while FM scanning was conducted. Critical attention was given to all high masts and sites located in mountainous areas, i.e. locations attractive for illegal activities. In addition, the Site Access Process will be reviewed for all employees and third parties.

"We sincerely regret the unfortunate incident, which violates our code of business ethics and code of conduct, contracted responsibilities as well as our company’s values.”

An MTN source had disclosed that the engineer, David Nwawuisi, “was able to install the transmitters because he worked with Ericsson Nigeria Limited, one of the companies to which the telecommunications firm outsources the maintenance of its base stations.”

MTN owns 12,000 base stations across the country, and Huawei, a Chinese networking and manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, is the other company that is responsible for the maintenance of these base stations.

However, Nwawuisi, who is currently standing trial with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is a field maintenance engineer with the Swedish technology company.

The MTN source, who did not wish to be mentioned, said Nwawuisi’s role was to grant access to IPOB engineers to mount the transmitters on MTN’s masts under his care.
“The transmitters, which were used in boosting the signals of Radio Biafra allegedly transmitted from London, the United Kingdom, were discovered by the security agencies on MTN masts in Enugu and Anambra states,” one of the sources said.

According to him, the second suspect, Benjamin Madubugwu, helped with the installation of the transmitters in Anambra State, also in concert with IPOB engineers.

Both men were contacted by Chidibere Onwudiwe, a suspected IPOB member, for the job, according to court papers filed by the Federal Government.

Cultists Set Buildings On Fire In Akoka (photo)

Olaleye Aluko

No fewer than 25 persons have been rendered homeless after suspected cultists invaded two buildings on Sholanke Street in the Akoka, Yaba area of Lagos State and set fire to them.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the hoodlums, who came at about 7.30am on Wednesday, did not allow their victims to take any property from the buildings.

It was learnt that rival cultists had clashed on Ibukunolu Street on Tuesday at about 7pm, and had stabbed a 17-year-old student, identified only as Rilwan, to death.

Two of the attackers were said to be identified as Lolade, also known as Makayoko , and Ororo .

Our correspondent learnt that the victim, who worked as a printer on the street, was from a family of three, and had just gained admission to the Yaba College of Technology.

PUNCH Metro gathered that angry rival cultists had thereafter stormed Sholanke Street in the night, and threatened that they would raze Makayoko ’s father’s apartment as a reprisal for the killing of Rilwan.

It was learnt that some residents alerted the policemen from the Bariga division to the unrest and the police came on patrol during the night.

Our correspondent gathered that the cultists, however, stormed the street at about 7am on Wednesday, locked the street gates and set fire to Makayoko ’s father’s house.
The landlord of the building was identified simply as Oyedele.

When PUNCH Metro arrived at about 9.30am, there were people in front of the buildings trying to salvage property from the fire.

Our correspondent observed two police vans from the Bariga division patrolling the street, and two fire service trucks driving out.

One of the occupants of the building, a father of five, Abu Abdullahi, said the hoodlums did not allow the firefighters to enter the area as they had locked the two gates.

He said, “The hoodlums came around 7.30am. The anger of the cultists was that one boy was killed on the neighbouring street. We later heard that our landlord’s son was seen where the boy was killed.

“The police came last night on a patrol in a van, but they left in the morning. Around 7am, we noticed a tall guy standing in front of the house and making calls. In a few minutes, the hoodlums stormed the buildings and set them on fire.

“We began to run out with the property we could carry. I have five children. Only the last born of my children stays with me. I was working with the University of Lagos before I retired. The police were aware of yesterday’s killing, and they should have strengthened security in the area.

“We also called the firefighters. It was later that we learnt that they were around for 15 minutes after we called, but the hoodlums did not allow them to enter.”

Another occupant, Stephen Okisor, said he could not pick any property from the fire.

He said, “We are about four families in the first building. The Boys Quarters houses about three families. I could not pick any item from the fire, except this clothes I am wearing.”

A resident, who identified himself simply as Micah, said the policemen did not come promptly to arrest the hoodlums.

He said, “It was around 8am that I noticed the fire. When the firefighters came, they were barred by the hoodlums from coming into the street. Twenty minutes after, the police arrived in the area, but everything had died down.”

Our correspondent noticed the Rapid Response Squad car driving into the area at about 11am when most of the crowds had dispersed.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the police in Bariga had yet to arrest any of the suspected cultists.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said he was at a meeting and he would get back to our correspondent on the matter.

He, however, had yet to get back as of press time.

Biafra: Dutch, Seven Others To Testify Against Kanu: Punch

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

The Federal Government has enlisted a Dutch, Mr. Ronald Stilting, Manager, Golden Tulip Airport Hotel, Lagos, among the eight prosecution witnesses that are to testify against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Radio Biafra , Nnamdi Kanu, and two others when their trial for alleged treason and other ancillary offences begins next year.

Operatives of the Department of State Services on October 14, 2015, arrested Kanu at the Golden Tulip Airport Hotel, where he allegedly checked into, using a fictitious name.

On December 23, the accused persons were scheduled for arraignment before a Federal High Court in Abuja, but Kanu refused to take his plea to the six counts of treason and other charges instituted against him and his two co-defendants due to what he called his lack of confidence in the presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed.

The judge promptly returned the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, for reassignment to another judge and the three accused persons were returned to the custody of the DSS.

The Federal Government, through the Federal Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Mohammed Diri, alleged in the summary of its case in the newly filed six counts that the IPOB leader checked into the hotel, using the name, Ezebuiro Nwannekaenyi, in order to conceal his identity.

Diri stated this in a document listing the proposed prosecution witnesses lined up to testify against Kanu and the two others.
The DPP stated, “Stilting is the Manager of Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos.
“He will give evidence as to how the 1st defendant checked into Golden Tulip Hotel, Airport, Lagos.”

The DPP stated that Kanu, a citizen of both Nigeria and Britain, had as his name on the Nigerian passport, Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Ngozichukwu Okwukanu, while his British passport bore Nnamdi Kenny Okwukanu.
Diri stated, “Nnamdi Kanu is a Nigerian/British citizen, with both Nigerian and British passports.
“The Nigerian passport bears the name Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Ngozichukwu Okwukanu, while the British passport bears the name Nnamdi Kenny Okwukanu.

“Kanu is the self-acclaimed founder and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, the pedestal on which he is propagating a secessionist agenda, aimed at carving a Republic of Biafra out of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before he was arrested on 14th October, 2015 at Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos, where he checked in, using a fictitious name of Ezebuiro Nwannekaenyi, apparently to conceal his identity.”

Stilting, in a hand-written statement which he made to the DSS on October 15, confirmed that Kanu was checked into the hotel on the previous day in another name.
He stated, “On the evening of 14th October around 10pm, I was called in my room to assist in solving a problem going on in the lobby at the Golden Tulip Airport Hotel.

“I met the director of SSS (DSS) and a number of agents there who were searching for a Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, who was supposed to be lodging in our hotel.
“Nobody was registered under that name in our systems.
“I assisted the agents to check all occupied rooms. Eventually, we found a suspicious person in Room 303, who turned out to be Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, who had registered under another name.

“I had never seen the man before and I am not aware of Mr. Nnamdi’s activities.”
Apart from Kanu, one of the two other defendants in the six counts filed by the Federal Government is a Field Maintenance Engineer, David Nwawuisi, who was given the responsibility of maintaining MTN masts in Enugu State.

The other defendant, Benjamin Madubugwu, was said to be living in Ubilisiuzo, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, where he allegedly received custody of a container housing radio transmitters meant for Radio Biafra from Kanu.

In the six counts preferred against the three defendants, Kanu is accused of treasonable felony through his alleged agitation in his broadcasts on Radio Biafra for the secession of Biafra Republic from Nigeria.
The offence is punishable under section 41(c) of the Criminal Code Act.

Kanu is also accused of managing an unlawful society (IPOB) and smuggling into the country a TRAM 50L radio transmitters.
Both offences are said to be punishable under Section 63 of the Criminal Code Act and section 47(2)(a) of the Customs and Excise Management Act.
Madubugwu was also separately accused in count five of unlawful possession of firearms, comprising one Emerald Magnum Pump Action gun, one Delta Pump Action gun and 41 cartridges/ammunition without lawful authority or licence.

The offence is said to be punishable under section 27(b)(1) of the Firearms Act.
Madugwu and Nwawuisi are also accused of assisting in the management of the allegedly unlawful IPOB, an offence punishable under Section 63 of the Criminal Code Act.

Others enlisted as witnesses that will testify against Kanu and his co-defendants when the trial begins are four operatives of the DSS, who are to give evidence on, among others, the circumstances of Kanu’s arrest and the search conducted at Ubulusiuzor, Anambra State home of Madubugwu.

Another proposed witness is an unnamed “security lady attached to the MTN mast at Ngwo Enugu” who is to give evidence on how the defendants negotiated for the mounting of the Radio Biafra transmitter at the site of the mast.

The rest of the two proposed witnesses are members of staff of the National Broadcasting Corporation, who are to testify on recorded broadcasts of Radio Biafra , inspection of the TRAM 50L transmitter.

The fresh charges were filed against the three men barely 24 hours after Justice Adeniyi Ademola in a ruling on Kanu’s bail application on December 17, ordered his unconditional release from DSS custody having been detained for about two months without any valid charges filed against him.

No new date has been fixed for the arraignment of the accused persons.

Things Women Notice The First Time They Meet A Man.

        Image result for LOVERS
Meeting a new guy can be as exhilarating as it is daunting. For him to be bae, he has to meet the approval of your mates, your family and more importantly and first on the list- you! So if you are wondering if the little things you just have to tick off your list after he says hello are important then compare your list to ours!

1) His appearance.

We are finicky about the way he looks. We want a man who breathes swag! He doesn't have to wear very expensive clothes but his clothes should fit him and be a good match and his sense of style should be good enough to keep us interested.

2) His time piece!

A good wristwatch speaks volumes. It says he is classy, he has good taste and he can afford to splurge so our eyes never miss the sparkle beneath his sleeve!

3) His breath!

Fresh breath is a must-have. Bad breath is a deal breaker any day and any man who is oblivious to the smell emanating from his mouth will be oblivious to other things that are very important to us besides how can we even bear to respond to his hello when his breath is hostile?

4) His diction!

Good English is a must. A man who can't construct a proper sentence without burning our ears will never be bae! Where would we even start from? How on earth would we communicate or introduce him to other sapiosexuals?

5) His manners!

We want prince charming and not an ogre in a nice suit! If he can't be decent to the strangers around him and acts rude, brash or entitled or less than the gentleman he ought to be then he definitely won't make the cut! Chivalry isn't dead!

6) His scent

There's nothing quite as heavenly as a man who smells good. The scent of his cologne mixing with his manly scent just makes our pheromones gush! On the other hand a man who smells sweaty, icky or pungent is an immediate turn off.

So which of these have you crossed off your list today? If he doesn't make first cut, there's no point probing deeper!

Suspect Escapes With Handcuffs On Way To Court

Afeez Hanafi

There was confusion on Wednesday at Tinubu, Lagos Island, after a suspected vandal, Johnson Ede, jumped from a car conveying him and five others to a magistrates’ court in the area.

Ede and other suspects ─ Emmanuel Peters, 29; Idris Adamu, 27; Mohammed Ahmed, 37; Salisu Adamu, 33; and 23-year-old Odichi Ochechi ─ were arrested for allegedly vandalising water pipes on Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island and for stealing 350 metres of 12mm cables owned by Hitec Construction Company Limited on December 28, 2015.

It was gathered that 32-year-old Ede escaped through the window of the moving car with a pair of handcuffs in his hand.
PUNCH Metro learnt that a woman corporal was taking Ede, whose name appeared as the first defendant on the charge sheet, and the five others to court when the incident happened.

Our correspondent gathered the officer was not assisted in chasing the fleeing suspect when she called for help from passersby.
When the other five suspects were subsequently arraigned before the court a few hours later, she narrated the incident to the presiding magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, who enquired about the whereabouts of Ede, whose name appeared on the charge sheet as the first defendant.

“The car was moving when he (Ede) jumped from the window and escaped with the handcuffs in his hands. I was shouting for help, but people did not respond. I decided to let him go so that the five others would not escape as well. We were almost at the court when he jumped down. I can’t explain how he managed to escape,” she said.

The remaining five suspects were arraigned on three counts bordering on vandalism and stealing by a police prosecutor, Inspector R.A. Odigie.

The charges read, “That you, Emmanuel Peters, Idris Adamu, Mohammed Ahmed, Salisu Adamu and Odihi Ochechi, and others now at large, on December 28, 2015, at about 3pm, on Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: stealing and wilful damage.

“That you, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did wilfully damage drainage pipes valued at N200,000, and water pipes valued at N100,000, property of Hitech Construction Company Limited, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

“That you and others now at large on the same date, time and place did steal 350 metres of 12mmm cables, property of Hitech Construction Company Limited, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and were admitted to bail by Owolabi, in the sum of N300,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Owolabi added that the sureties must be gainfully employed, related to the defendants by blood and evidence of tax payments made to the state government to the prosecutor for verification.

The case was adjourned till February 29, 2016 for mention.

Largest Yoruba Settlement In Togo - Atakpame

Discover Atakpame, The most western major settlement in Yorubaland

An ethnic group in Atakpame, Togo (The Ana Ife) hold on to a distinct brand of Yoruba they inherited from their forefathers, writes AKEEM LASISI, just back from the West African country.
Denise Fantchede would have been a Nigerian but for an accident of history as a native of Ife. But she is a native of Atakpame, a community of Yoruba origin in Togo and one of those whose ancestors migrated to the West African country when tribal wars raged in the 17th century. Yet, the same history that changed the course of her descent has made her multilingual. Fantchede speaks French, which is Togo’s official language. She speaks English, which she learnt in school and in neighbouring Ghana. She is also fluent in Ewe, one of the indigenous languages in Togo. Most importantly, her mother tongue is Ife (One of the native Yoruba tongues of Togo), which some scholars would call Ife-Togo, an ‘independent’ Yoruba dialect spoken by the majority of Atakpame indigenes, who trace their origins to Ile-Ife. (It should be noted that combined, all Yoruba subgroups in Togo are said to number about 0.3 Million)
Today, Atakpame is the 5th largest settlement in Togo by population.

Like Atakpame, like Idanre

In terms of landmark, Atakpame shares some similarities with Ibadan and Abeokuta. While the capital cities of Oyo and Ogun States flaunt the Olumo Rock and Oke Ibadan as their ancestral symbols, respectively, Atakpame, a settlement town that is about 160 kilometres away from Lome, the Togolese capital, defines its origin by seven mountains that surround it. Just like many other towns in Yorubaland, where myths are explored to trace the people’s roots, Atakpame’s history is not complete without reference to the mountains. According to some elders of the town, the rocks played supernatural roles when the natives were engaged in battles with other ethnic groups. This is how Atakpame also shares topographical and historical similarities with Idanre, Ondo State, a town famed for the huge and acrobatic mountains that surround it. According to Fantchede, Ife Togo is widely used in Atakpame because the people, who trace their descent to Ile-Ife, are the dominant group there. She, however, expresses concern over the future of the language because not many young people speak it. (Speaking more of French and other languages). She says, “The number of young people who speak Ife here is decreasing because of changes in the society and the fact that it is not taught in schools. But I speak it any time I have the opportunity to do so. Our elders also use it constantly.”

As a result of the entrenched cross-fertilisation that Ife Togo has had with French, Ewe, et cetera, it is easier for the Yoruba in Lome, Cotonou and Ajase {Porto Novo), among others, to understand one another than for the immigrant Yorubas in Lome to understand Ife Togo speakers in Atakpame – and vice versa.

A Yoruba scholar, Dr. Felix Fabunmi, notes that a language that is spoken by many people, such as Yoruba, usually has dialects that may differ from one another. In a research he conducted on Ife numerals, the lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, acknowledges Ife Togo, Ife Benin, Tsabe, Ajase and Idaatsa, which he describes as Yoruboid, being “the mother tongues of speech communities whose forefathers migrated from Nigeria to Dahomey, now Republic of Benin.” This invariably covers the brand spoken in Togo, too. Fabunmi notes in a study titled ‘Vigesimal Numerals on Ife (Togo) and Ife (Nigeria) Dialects of Yoruba’, “Today, the capital of Ife (Togo) is Atakpame. The Ifè (Togo) dialect of Yoruba is spoken by approximately 90,000 people in Atakpame town and the speakers of that dialect stretch from the Benin boundary around Bante and Tchetti up to Atakpame in Togo. “The majority of these Ife settlers migrated from Ija-Oku in former Dahomey into the Togolese territory and subsequently founded the city of Atapkame. “There are several other early settlers or ethnic groups in Atakpame, such as Fon, Ewe, Aposo, Kabrelosso and Ketokoli, but the people of Seti, Jama and Igberiko are predominantly Ife. Other Ife (Togo) villages where speakers of Ife reside include Alabata, Okutaya, Efujaye, Oko Asade, Asoko Ayepada and Yanmosile.”

Ife-Togo is well tone-marked

Yoruba is a tonal language, comprising the high, mid and low tones. That is how a word such as ‘odo’ can mean different things as the tone changes. These include odo (mortar), odo (river) and odo (zero). Also, ‘ere’ can be translated as play, sculpture and profit in different contexts and with different tonal marks, just as ‘agbon’ can be a word for basket, coconut or wasp. Investigation by our correspondent reveals that the Ife Togo dialect retains the tonal property of the Yoruba language. Apart from the inflexions that the natives interviewed demonstrate in their speeches, words in the books that our correspondent bought in Atakpame are duly tone-marked. Perhaps the only difference is that the mid tone, which is no more marked in the modern Nigerian Yoruba language, is still marked in Ife Togo. Indeed, our observation also shows that Ife Togo has not responded to the series of orthographical changes that the standard Yoruba has experienced, especially since the early 1970s. As a result, while Yoruba grammar now forbids the collocation of two consonants in a word, which makes Offa, Otta, Oshogbo and Ogbomosho to be written nowadays as Ofa, Ota, Osogbo and Ogbomoso, Ife Togo still flaunts words such as nwon (they), itsu (yam) and Atakpame itelf!

As another Yoruba scholar, Mr. Mudasir Alabi, however, notes, Ife Togo is as rich as any other dialect of the language. Based on his observation in some of the books, he notes that what it may also have lost in terms of the words that the standard Yoruba borrowed from English and other Nigerian languages, it has gained through its relationship with French and other languages in Atakpame and Togo in general. “But I could also see that Ife Togo uses phonological symbols in its writing of Yoruba vowels and consonants like ‘o’ and ‘j’,” Alabi says. Our correspondent further observes that the Atakpame variant of Yoruba is also imagistic. A review of the Ife Togo Bible and other story books bought by our correspondent that it is deep enough to produce a rich literature and writers the way the Yoruba Language has produced great works and writers that include Wole Soyinka, Niyi Osundare, Amos Tutuola, Olawuyi Ogunniran and Lanrewaju Adepoju. Our investigation does not reveal any major writer in Ife Togo, but we came across artistes, especially singers who have popularised the language in their works. Among them is Victor Star, who has released several albums, including ‘Nonu-Etse-Yeesu’, which can be translated as ‘Thank You Jesus’. “She is a very popular singer in Atakpame. Many people like her and she uses Ife in most of her songs,” Fanknede says. Our correspondent also visited a pharmacy shop operated by Kujo Akpo, where Ife is the medium of communication with customers.

Nagbe Kotannoa is very proud of the exploits of the forefathers of the Ife people of Atakpame. A historian, culture promoter and musician, Kotannoa is, in Atakpame, synonymous with the Tchebe traditional art, whose features are largely traceable to what obtains among the Yoruba in Nigeria. Particularly, he promotes the pole dance, a variant of what the Yoruba call ‘ageere’. In different parts of South-West Nigeria, ageere dancers entertain people at socio-cultural events, just as some of them work with masqueraders. Kotannoa, who worked in collaboration with Emmanuel Lambert to produce ‘Thebe: Danse Traditional au Togo’, a book that documents the activities of Tchebe dancers, agrees with the authorities that trace the history of Ife Togo to Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Kotannoa adds that when war eventually pushed the people to the present location in Togo, which had yet to be named Atakpame then, they met the Udu people, said to be of Ghanaian origin. But they were later outnumbered by the Nigerian migrants. Eventually, a prominent tree called Atakpara, from where the people get chewing stick till today, inspired a name that all the tribes agreed could define them. “Atakpara was adjusted to Atakparame until it was finally shortened to Atakpame,” Kotannoa notes. The Ife in Togo also pay homage to the seven mountains – especially the Oke Ekpa, the way natives of Ibadan pay homage to Okebadan (Ibadan Mountain) and the Egba salute Olumo Rock in Nigeria. Kotannoa explains that at a point the fight became heated, the Mount Ekpa opened and allowed the Ife Togo people to pass through to the other side. It closed as soon as the last person crossed. He adds, “When the enemies got there, the mountain opened again, but immediately swallowed all of them. It swallowed them like the Red Sea. So, whenever we want to celebrate Odun Itshu – the Yam Festival – our men go to Oke Ekpa to perform the ceremony,” Kotannoa enthuses. He gives the names of the other mountains as Oke Ologbo, Akposo, Omi Kosi, Agama, Aru Egidigbe and Batabali. A visit to the mountains by our correspondent showed that they surround the town, which corroborates Kotannoa’s assertion that they serve as a wall of defence for the people. Not much is, however, going on there, perhaps in terms of the need to really turn them into tourist attractions.

Echoes of Oyo Empire

While official figures say Atakpamé is the fifth largest city in Togo by population (84,979 inhabitants in 2006), sources identify the ‘Battle of Atakpame’ as one of the major wars the people fought in 1764. That year, the town had played host to a clash between “the rebellious Akyem vassal state with the help of Yoruba mercenaries of the Oyo Empire and the Dahomeans against the forces of the Ashanti Empire under their Asantehene , Kosi Oboadum. “The result of the battle was a crushing defeat of the Ashanti forces and the death of their Juabenhene (head of one of the royal clans). The repercussion of this defeat by the Oyo Empire was the destoolment of Kusi Obodum, who was replaced by a much younger and charismatic Asantehene, Osei Kwadwo Okoawia,” an online source says. However, there are no indications that the Yoruba in Atakpame in any way pay allegiance to or maintain any relationship with the Oyo heritage in Nigeria. But our correspondent saw sights and sounds of Yorubaland, including ‘real’ pounded yam (and not mechanised poundo yam), moinmoin and akara, which were on sale, as part of the cultural heritage of the Ife Togo people that their ancestors must have taken from Ife.

"Here, names also have meanings"[

In Yoruba, as is obtainable in many other African languages, most native names have meanings and are usually symbolic. ‘Babawale’ means ‘Our father has returned home’. That is why it is usually given to a boy born after the passage of a father in the family. Its feminine counterpart is ‘Yetunde’, ‘Yewande’ or ‘Iyabo’, names given to a girl born after the death of a mother. Atakpame people of Yoruba origin still keeps this tradition. For instance, Kotannoa says his full name is ‘Afo-kotana’ or ‘Afo-kotan-ninu’, meaning when people talk or say something, a lot is still buried in their stomachs (minds). Also. Agounkey explains that his name literally suggests ‘Ma-gun-mi-ke’, suggesting ‘Ma-gun-mi-ni-kese’ – ‘Don’t push me too much’ or ‘don’t push me with your elbow’, or, metaphorically, ‘don’t push me to the wall/‘don’t provoke me’.

Playing politics with Ife?

Although Kotannoa concedes that Ife Togo is neither official nor taught in schools, he believes that the language cannot die. While this contrasts with Fentchede’s position, who fears that a language not embraced by the elite is endangered, Kotannoa says, “Ife already dominates other languages in Atakpame. Even Udu people now speak Ife. But Ife people don’t speak Udu.” Experts have argued that it is not possible to separate language from politics. So it seems for Ife Togo and the local politics in Atakpame. Since Ife people trace their roots to Ile-Ife in Nigeria, one would expect that they would physically maintain their link with their origin. But this does not seem to be so. Chatting with Kotannoa, for instance, our correspondent wondered why Atakpame did not send any delegation to Ile-Ife when the new Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, was recently installed. His response indicates that Ife Togo would ordinarily want to oil its link with Yorubas in Nigeria, but there are some political issues at home. According to him, some politicians in Atakpame, at a point, wanted to fly sentiments that the Ife Togo people were not Togolese but Nigerians. Because this could weaken the Ife Togo people’s chances, they, too, have learnt not to take steps that their opponents could exploit to campaign against them.

Church to the rescue

Recalling that it was Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther that translated the Bible into Yoruba, it is interesting to find out that a Christian organisation is in the forefront of the propagation of Ife Togo in Atakpame. The group, the Association Chretienne pour l’Alphabetisation et la Traduction de la Bible en Langue Ife (the Christian Association for Bible Translation and Literacy Programmes) otherwise called ACATBLI, organises tutorials in the language, with a focus on people who never had the opportunity to acquire or learn it before. As Crowther did, one of the main achievements of the non-governmental organisation is the translation of the Bible into Ife Togo. Titled ‘Iwe-Odaye Imole-Ikannyi’ (Iwe Idaye Imole Ikeyin, that is The New Testament), the 635-page publication is already in the hands of many people, with ACATBLI’s Director, Kaleb Agounkey, saying only 2,000 copies are now in stock, from the 11,000 produced in 2009. The organisation’s literacy programmes are also being supported with several other books it has published. Among them are ‘Les Peuples Ife et Leur Origine’ – being a comparative analysis of Ife Togo and an ancient Egyptian language; ‘Obe Dictionnaire Ife-Francais’, which is an Ife Togo-French dictionary.

While there are also several publications on different books of the Bible, one other major lecture books produced by ACATBLI is ‘Gbale-ee Tana o Gba Ona’ – ‘Gbale ki o to Gba Ona’, literally meaning ‘sweep your home before you sweep the road’. The idea here is to help Ife Togo people to protect their identity even when they have to promote other values. Agounkey says the project was started by partners who came together in 1981. They began by developing the phonetics and phonology of Ife Togo. The project covers Bible translation, literacy and social development. The director says the training that the centre gives to people is not free, but it gets some funding from some organisations, which it uses to settle some of the bills. He adds, “When one of our partners who came from Sweden went back to her country, she helped in getting some funding from the Swedish government and other organisations. We also work with Ife people who work in other parts of Togo and Benin, because the area they occupy is very large.” Agounkey says ACATBLI teaches 3,000 people Ife annually and it has, since the beginning of the campaign, trained up to 25,000 people in the art of speaking and writing the language. “I am glad that a lot of people and the language are gaining from our efforts. Other tribes have published and dedicated their own New Testaments, but no one buys them. “In our own case, many people, especially those from different churches such as the Catholic, Anglican and Deeper Life, use ours. Some congregations and a church like the Deeper Life conduct all their programmes in Ife – their sermons, songs and all. Many churches who conduct theirs in French interpret it in Ife,” the director notes.

Nigerian films subtitled in Ife

Unlike Atakpame politicians, Agounkey hopes to network with Nigeria. He will, therefore, welcome any initiative that can make that happen. Specifically, he wants to work with Nigerian film and music producers in such a way that ACABTLI can translate their works into Ife Togo. He believes there is a market waiting to absorb that. But, while Agounkey is genuinely expecting that, some pirates may have started reaping where they did not sow in this regard. Our correspondent visited some film and music shops in Atakpame, where he found out that several Nigerian works are not only on sale, some of them have also been translated or subtitled in French, Ife and some other Togolese and Beninois languages – under very suspicious circumstances. Among the works sighted and bought by the journalist are ‘Ameka ye L’adem’ (featuring the likes of Funke Akindele and Ini Edo); ‘Jalousie’ (Aki and Pawpaw) and ‘Flavi Tiata’ (featuring Olu Jacobs and other Nigerian actors).

Stressful trip

By road, a trip from Nigeria to Togo ought to be fun-filled. Ordinarily, it should give a traveller the opportunity to experience three West African countries, with Republic of Benin in the middle of the three. He wants to sit by the window of the bus to see villages, see people selling different things by the road side and have access to one or two things he would like to buy. If he is a nature freak, he wants to smell the flora and fauna of different African towns and villages. But that may really not be on an international route like the Lagos-Cotounu-Lome. As this correspondent experienced, a lot of fun killers are waiting for the dreamer almost everywhere. First, how can a journey calculated to last six hours, which eventually lasts 10 hours or more, spin excitement? Within Lagos, it took one about three hours to reach the bus terminus in Mile 2, the Cotounu-Badagry end of the geography, from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway end the journalist took off from. At Mile 2, we had to spend some four hours as the bus endlessly waited for passengers. Yet, when we eventually left Mile 2, we were filled with the hope that within six hours, we would be in Lome. But two hours after, the bus still did not get to Badagry, not to talk of Cotounu, as the road was bedevilled by traffic jams. Between Badagry and Lome, the bus had to stop many times, at checkpoints where the principal target of security guys is money, money and more money. Even at the borders where Customs and other agents are waiting like hungry lions, many passengers had to part with various sums of un-receipted cefas. The story was the same when this correspondent was returning from Togo. For one, be it at Seme or Cotounu-Lome boundary, West African borders are so rowdy, porous and corrupt that one could be tempted to think that the region is a million years away from civilisation.
