– Fulani herdsmen unleashed mayhem in Enugu killing some people and wounding several others
– 19 persons have been declared missing
– Police urge community members not to take law into their hands
Armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have reportedly attacked a community in Enugu state killing a brother and a sister and also setting buildings on fire.
Vanguard reports that the mayhem occurred on Thursday, February 11 when the herdsmen stormed Abbi community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of the state and burnt house and motorcycles. The attackers who numbered about 30 reportedly came out of a bush and slashed people with machetes. A brother and a sister died in the mayhem while several persons were wounded. 19 persons were also declared missing after the herdsmen fled back into the bush.
The siblings who died in the attack were identified as 45 year old Fidelis Okeja and his sister Mercy, 50. The duo was having a conversation in front of their house when they were killed.
The herdsmen who shot sporadically during the attack left a trail of confusion as people scurried to safety.
A community source revealed that the people were taken by surprise during the attack and that security operatives failed to show up.
‘’The most worrisome aspect of the Fulani invasion of the community was that about 19 people are still missing as nobody can give account of them. Those missing were last seen on the fateful day. The community formed search parties in groups, combing bushes within and outside the community for days now, yet no sign of success has been recorded.
‘’We have lodged formal complaint at both Adani police station and Police Area Command Nsukka, but no arrests have been made over the matter. The Fulani herdsmen were armed to the teeth with dangerous weapons when they invaded us.
“Two people killed while 19 missing, several others brutalised with deep machete cuts now lying critical down at different hospitals.
“The corpses of the deceased Fidelis and Mercy have been deposited at Bishop Sanahan Hospital, Nsukka while the search for the missing 19 people continues,” he said.
A police officer of the Enugu command who spoke on the condition of anonymity described the incident has pathetic and said a full scale investigation had started. He urged the people not to take law into their hands. He added however that no report of missing persons has been received yet.
The attack by the herdsmen has increased in recent times with the kidnap of CHief Olu Falae making headlines across the country.
There was also tension Oyo state as farmer and Fulani herdsmen clashed when hundreds of farmers in Ido local government area staged a peace protest over the continued invasion and destruction of their farmlands by the herdsmen.
