The promise of the Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau state to develop
the state Judiciary for better justice delivery has started taking
effect as the state ministry of justice is expected to be ICT compliant
soon.
Disclosing this in an exclusively interview with REALITY today in his
office, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,
Jonathan Mawiyau (Esq) said the governor has already approved the
computerization of the state Ministry of Justice to also enhance the
quality of lawyers in the Ministry.
The AG said, “Governor Lalong is measuring up to his promises
concerning the judiciary. If you want to compete with other parts of the
country and the world at large, you have to put down structures and
facilities that are modern to be accommodating, especially to help with
information flow, mostly through the present ICT. I believe he has taken
steps as far as this Ministry is concerned.
“Recently, he has approved something for us as a Ministry to do our
computerization and be linked to the world through the Internet. I
think this is a big achievement! Very soon we will soon start and you
will see changes!
“It is our plan that, every Lawyer that has no laptop would now have a
laptop. If that is achieved, you know basically, the quality of the
Lawyers would change. As, the lawyers can sit in their houses and access
latest Supreme Court decisions, International Journals, among others.
And this will boost the quality of the output as expected.
“It is a fact that one could come with very beautiful plans, but the
major challenge as you know, tend to come from financing. And you cannot
put that problem on the Governor in anyway, because, it is as resources
come that he would apply them to the development of Court rooms.
“Every time the Governor talks about developing the Judiciary, you
can see it in his heart and you begin to see those projects already
developed. Except that, they have to be reproduced. But, this will not
come from his heart but from the available resources. I believe with the
dwindling revenue coming from the federation account, which has gone
down significantly, he is looking into some other areas and we have
considered improving on the revenue generation in the state and that is
been worked out.
“The laws concerning those areas are now being looked into and
reviewed. We have looked into some, what is left are those laws
concerning those collecting revenues. We want them to come and sit with
us to discuss, so that, there would be no clashes in the collection. By
the time we finish that, and the law is in place, we will give an
enabling environment that would help us enhance a good measure of
increase in the revenue.”
