The FBI took seriously a specific threat and ordered the campus to evacuate and cancel all classes and activities on Monday.
It is not clear if the threat had any link to Islamic State or other Muslim extremists or was sparked by a lone gunman with a personal grudge.
It comes a month after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, killing nine people.
And in 2007 a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech, a college in Blacksburg, Virginia, and then posted a video online.

“It was pretty specific in terms of time and place”

The University of Chicago said last night (Sunday) that an online threat from an unknown person had specifically mentioned the quad – a popular meeting place – on the city's Hyde Park campus at 10am on Monday.
"It was pretty specific in terms of time and place," said university spokesman Jeremy Manier.
He said thousands of students living on campus should stay indoors on Monday.
The university said the decision was taken after taking into account "recent tragic events" and after consulting with federal law enforcement authorities.
FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde said the FBI was investigating the source of the threat.
